Healthy School Meals

Under the National School Lunch Program, school meals must meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat and portion size and ensure that every meal offers milk, fruits and vegetables, grains and proteins.  Find out more about healthy school meals:

Rising Costs

Financial constraints continue to challenge school nutrition programs as they work to offer more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products.  School Nutrition Association's 2010 Back to School Trends Survey found that 78.6% of districts expect food costs to increase in the coming school year and 65% anticipate that the federal reimbursement for free and reduced price meals served under the National School Lunch Program will fail to cover the cost of producing the meals.

2010 Child Nutrition Reauthorization

As Congress works to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, School Nutrition Association has been advocating for increased funds for school meals and national nutrition standards for all foods sold during the school day.

School Breakfast

School breakfast is a great way to jumpstart a student's day.  Research as found that eating breakfast is linked to improved academic performance, less absenteeism and behavioral problems.

Food Safety

Federal law requires school nutrition programs to meet the toughest food safety restrictions in the foodservice industry.

Farm to School

More school nutrition programs are implementing Farm to School programs and serving locally sourced foods in the cafeteria.
